About the River

The Stillwater River is a snow-melt spring-fed river that heads high in the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains near Yellowstone National Park. The river increases in size as it races through the mountains, until it emerges out of a narrow canyon with a roar. From there, the Stillwater slows down a bit, but offers excellent rafting and kayaking opportunities as it makes its way toward the Yellowstone.

Since the Stillwater River is entirely free-flowing (no dams), the flows fluctuate a great deal throughout the course of the summer. Peak flows generally occur in May or June and then fall off as the summer progresses. Regardless of when you float, the Stillwater is fun for all.
